What's new

START/STOP Technology

Whatever mpg gains you get are negligible shut it off and your starter will last way longer. Wife and I have a Subaru with this feature and we shut it off every single time we drive it. Thankfully the Camaro doesn't have it.

Starters and the entire system around the engine are upgraded in cars with the auto stop so you really won't need to worry about it dying on you.
Gas mileage is only going to be noteworthy if you regularly drive in heavy traffic or spend tons of time at stoplights. Auto stop/start is more to help with emissions than anything else.

That said, if anybody finds a way to default it to off please let me know. Preferably a Tazer/ECU method rather than a cable but I'll take what I can get.

Is it possible to configure the "START/STOP" control to default to always OFF?
The manufacturer can't legally add this feature due to emissions changes. The US administration just put out a video claiming that they are doing away with this law but the vid was full of misinformation so who knows.

I'm just waiting for aftermarket hacks. There are a couple ways to mod the older models to default it to off, I'm waiting (impatiently) for someone to crack this on the newer models.

The START/STOP feature in my Durango was so annoying in the heavy traffic here in Seoul. When its battery failed to charge properly, we had it checked at a dealership. The technician advised us to just leave it as is since the feature was annoying to us, and we did.

One time, I was in a rush checking into a hotel and forgot to turn off the engine, I left it running outside for about a day. When we drove it afterward, the START/STOP began operating normally again. But after about a day, the battery failed once more. I'm actually happy that it failed again.

Has anyone here purchased and tested the auto start/stop eliminator bypass cable yet on the Six Pack?
Last I checked there wasn't one available yet. Not sure if one of the older models will work and I think it's an insane amount of disassembly required to get behind those buttons. I saw a video of a guy replacing the touch buttons just above and he had to remove the entire dash, starting at the glove box, moving up, then over to the screen and finally down to the buttons.

I'm really hoping for the Tazer method using the OBD II port.

Wow that's crazy. Yes lets hope for the "Tazer method".

You guys aren't worried about the warranty?

Magnusson-Moss Warranty act. If you modify the auto stop/start and it breaks then yes, you have voided your warranty pertaining to that system, however the dealer is legally required to show proof that your modification caused the issue, so even if you modified the system it may still be covered if they can't prove that you caused it.

If you modify the auto stop/start and something else breaks (ex. the engine blows up, or the brakes fail) then they can try to lie and tell you that it's your fault but they will not be able to prove that. You are not responsible for proving your innocence-- unless they try to take you for a ride and it needs to go to a court but my understanding is this is unlikely and a dealer might give you a hard time but if you call them on it they should hopefully back down.

If you put something in the OBD II port it wont void your warranty (well at least what we are talking about here). Tuning it will. There are people who have an AFM disable device in the OBD II ports of Camaros that don't have their warranty voided since it isn't an actual tune of the ECU. The permanent shut off of the Auto Stop start which is a much lower level feature compared to the AFM Disabler should also not void the warranty if you get the OBD II port connector. If the Dealer says it does find another dealer because it doesn't. EDIT: We have the Auto Start Stop thing we plug in the OBD II port of our Subaru and Subaru has not voided our warranty either. As long as you do not do any Tuning you should be fine.

Also I think it might be worth the risk so my car doesn't shut off as I pull in to a parking space, only to have it start again as I put it in park, then I shut it off right after...🤬 I'm so sick of it
