S.O. Fuel Requirement

My R/T Plus is approaching its first fill up and the manual says to use 87 octane fuel but I’ve been reading some threads which suggest using 91. Obviously I don’t want to damage the engine or catalytic converter but also considered the ability to use regular unleaded as an advantage to the SO engine. Gas stations around here only have 87, 89 and 93. Should I put 93 in it or is 87 safe to use? Thanks

I'm not an expert, but I think without a tune, anything more than what the manual calls for is just going to be wasted money.

Pretty much what Ares4 stated. The SO is tuned for 87, any more and you're wasting money. HO is tuned for 91.

took my scat pack plus in for check engine light at 3200 miles for fuel trim code running rich. still waiting on results tech called and asked what gas I've been running I told him 93 and he said ok have heard back since hope to hear more tomorrow

It's weird to me that Dodge recommends 87 octane in the manual and yet they also say "The use of 91 or higher octane premium gasoline will allow these engines to operate to optimal performance". So they're recommending fuel that does not provide optimal performance?

The 87 is recommend for the non HO engine. It was posted here on the forum earlier. later RD

That's good though. You won't need every HP so I'd LOVE to be able to burn 87 when hammering miles on the highway. I have this gauge on my HC and can actually see when it pulls timing. If we drive like a grandma, we can use anything.

Nope, he is correct. Here's a manual page for us to learn..............

**********3.0L STANDARD OUTPUT ENGINE Do not use E-85 flex fuel or ethanol blends greater than15% in this engine. This engine is designed to meet all emissions requirements, and provide satisfactory fuel economy and performance, when using high-quality unleaded regular gasoline having an octane rating of 87, as specified by the (R+M)/2 method. The use of 91 or higher-octane premium gasoline will allow these engines to operate to optimal performance. This increase in performance is most noticeable in hot weather or under heavy load conditions such as while towing****************

You folks need to go back and look at some of the resent threads as this was just discussed this morning. You do need the 91 or 93 for the HO Later RJD
