Any mechanics/engineers who can explain for sure what these plastic shrouds (circled in red) around the air intake are? Initially I assumed they were sound dampening, but I'm wondering if they are temperature insulation to keep the incoming air cooler?
I absolutely hate the look of them and have been eagerly awaiting aftermarket silicone intake options to replace them, but I don't want to go ripping them out only to have worse performance.

Bonus question: Does anybody know another car that has these shrouds?

I thought that they were for intake noise control also. I think the general consensus is that a CAI only adds under-hood noise. I do remember those boxes, but not sure from what car.

Saw a Hornet this weekend and it has them as well.

Look up Helmholtz resonators. I still have the "Home Plate" from my 1994 LT1 Caprice. (IYKYK)
